25 juniors and seniors at John Handley High School in Winchester, VA connect one-one with students in Istanbul, Turkey once a week through online video conferencing. They work on tutoring English language skills to Turkish students. In addition, they practice language through discussions about culture and deeper issues, like gender equality, and social conflict. This idea for the virtual exchange came from Laura Sabatino, a science teacher in John Hadley High school, and her daughter Saloni. They traveled to Morocco for the iEARN International Conference. This is where they met Natalia, a teacher from Istanbul, Turkey. Laura says that the students in Winchester love the online session with the students in Turkey so much that they ask to connect in their free time. They hope to expand this virtual tutoring program to more students and countries.
