The Kennedy-Lugar YES Abroad program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is providing 65 American high school students with scholarships to study abroad in countries with significant Muslim populations for one academic year. The program is also open to recent graduates. Each merit-based scholarship covers the following program costs for participants: domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; accommodations with a host family; educational and cultural activities in the host country; orientations; applicable visa fees; three meals per day; and medical coverage.

As YES Abroad scholars, American high school students serve as youth ambassadors in their overseas host countries, promoting mutual understanding by forming lasting relationships with their host families and friends.  Scholars live with host families, attend local high schools, participate in enrichment activities, acquire leadership skills, and help educate others about American culture while learning about their host country’s culture.

For the 2014-15 academic year, full scholarships are available for one academic year in countries that may include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Oman, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia and Turkey.

Review eligibility requirements and apply now. Complete applications must be submitted by January 9, 2014.
