iEARN-USA Presents Wednesdays with the World Series

In spring 2020, iEARN-USA hosted a webinar series called “Wednesdays with the World” for teachers to use virtually with their classes. In each hour-long webinar, an iEARN Project Facilitator presented a mini-lesson, using activities from an iEARN project. Each lesson was followed by a brief section with tips for online learning. All webinars have been recorded and shared below.


MY HERO Mini-Lesson with Laura Nietzer

April 8th at 1:00 PM ET

MY HERO is collecting essays about heroes helping others during the coronavirus outbreak. In the first mini-lesson webinar, Laura Nietzer, iEARN Educator and Learning Circle Facilitator for the “MY HERO Call to Action” project, will guide students on how to write a three paragraph essay about their hero, and learn how to submit an essay for publication. Following this mini-lesson, students in the iEARN network submitted entries to the Coronavirus Hero Contest — find their original stories and artwork here.

iEARN International Book Club Mini-Lesson with Fay Stump

May 6th at 1:00 pm ET

We are often asked, “Where are you from?” Join us to think about a sensory response to that question that really shows others where you are from. After reading “Where Are You From?,” a picture book written by Yamile Saied Mendez, all participants in this webinar will then be invited to write their own poems and post them on the International Book Club forum or Facebook page.

iEARN Finding Solutions to Hunger Mini-Lesson with Mary Brownell

The more adaptable and flexible teachers can be with lessons/activities, the more our students will find solutions against hunger for the rest of their lives. In this mini-lesson, you will learn how to adapt several lessons to meet your own teaching needs and those of your primary, middle and upper school students.

Some students understand hunger from daily experience; despite this fact, they remain eager to understand and share their ideas about food and sustainability. Other students are blessed to experience food security, eager as well to unravel the causes of hunger in our shared world. To understand is to imagine change, and so we teach our students to take new knowledge and create solutions that will provide sustainability.

iEARN 101: Getting Started

iEARN 101: Getting Started

Ready to join iEARN’s global network, but not sure how to get started? Here are five steps to completing your first iEARN Global Project with your class:

1) Become a Member
Before you begin your first project, you need to create an account and become a member of iEARN! Membership provides teachers access to a global network of educators and 100+ K-12 projects through iEARN’s safe and password protected Collaboration Centre. This tutorial explains how to complete your membership registration form.

Membership fees vary from country to country and should not be a barrier to joining. If you have questions about membership fees in the U.S. or require financial assistance please contact [email protected].

2) Join a Project*

Next, it’s time to pick your first iEARN Global Project! There are more than 100 projects to choose from with a wide range of academic subjects, age levels, and time commitment. All projects are aligned with one or more of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a set of targets to improve the health and welfare of the planet and its people by the year 2030.

3) Find Classroom Partners*

Building relationships with fellow teachers is an essential component to a successful global project. Here are four easy ways to find classroom partners in the iEARN Network:

*Steps 2 and 3 can be done in the order that makes sense for you. Some teachers will select a project and then find partners, while others may make connections first and join a project together.

4) Conduct Project Activities

iEARN projects take shape through a combination of in-class class project work and online exchange activities. Classroom activities can include research, writing, class discussion, media creation, experiments, group work, and other homework or in-class activities that explore the topic and align with your content and skills standards. Exchange activities include forum discussions, media sharing, or video conferencing, or other activities where students communicate online with their partner classrooms. In-class and exchange activities build up to the creation of a final product, such as a joint student newsletter, website, video, or service activity.

5) Showcase Student Outcomes

A final component of global project-based learning is to share your collaborative work with your local and global community. When students share the results of their work, they become more engaged in the class subject matter, create higher quality results, and become empowered by raising awareness of key global issues and multiplying the impact of their learning. Registration is now open for iEARN’s Introduction to Online Collaboration and Global Projects – an online course taking place from February to April 2019. Read on for information on course description and fees.

iEARN online courses play a key role in supporting educators to become global education leaders. They create a professional learning community, provide support, and guide educators in integrating virtual exchange projects into their curriculum. When iEARN educators meet, connect, and learn from other educators in the network, they become engaged in a community of global changemakers and support one another in globalizing their classrooms.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In the Introduction to Online Collaboration and Global Projects, participants will learn about global project-based learning with iEARN, prepare to participate in a virtual exchange project with their class, and collaborate with other teachers from around the world. Following the online course, participants will select an iEARN project, participate in an exchange with their class, and reflect on their virtual exchange experience.

COURSE GOALS:

After completing this course, teachers will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of international collaboration and global project work
  • Integrate collaborative project-based learning into their teaching practice while addressing local/national educational standards
  • Prepare students for online cross-cultural communication and global project work
  • Participate in a facilitated first project experience and engage students in collaborative learning
  • Network with educators in the course and around the world

About the Global Education Ambassadors

iEARN-USA Global Education Ambassadors promote innovative global education both inside and outside of the classroom through online learning between teachers and students in the US and internationally. iEARN-USA Global Education Ambassadors play a key role as virtual exchange promoters and mentors. They network with, support, and guide these educators in integrating virtual exchange projects into their curriculum.

The Ambassadors not only have years of experience doing iEARN projects and working collaboratively with peers across the world, but they conduct in-person and online workshops for other educators, both locally and nationally; create resources to support global project-based learning; travel to the iEARN Annual International Conference; speak about iEARN at a variety of national conferences and convenings and are called upon for special global education initiatives throughout the year.

iEARN-USA is opening a call for active U.S. members to join the growing body of Ambassadors to promote iEARN project work, support new educators in the network, and continue their own global education and virtual exchange professional development. Tajik Teachers Participate in Photojournalism Workshop

Twenty-nine teachers from seven underserved government schools in Tajikistan participated in a professional development workshop in Dushanbe for the Photojournalism 2.0 Program.

The Program focuses on engaging participants from the Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Tajikistan in cross-cultural collaboration to help youth develop photojournalism and media skills.

The 3 day workshop from January 24th – 28th, introduced educators to the journalism, photojournalism, digital storytelling for social change, and global collaboration. Trainers included experienced journalists, experts in digital storytelling, and social change agents.Upon completion of the teacher workshops in each country, the same teachers from all three countries will participate in an online course together this spring. 2.0 program.
