Online Course Weekly Outline
In order for you to get a better
understanding of the Helping Students cope with Traumatic Events online course
content, we outline the weekly activities of the course in the
following. Before you read on to the content, please, take another look
at the iEARN online course prerequisites for participants:
* Basic word processing, Internet and e-mailing skills
* Reliable access to a computer and Internet
* Availability to commit at least 5 hours a week to course activities
* A classroom/students whom you will be working with throughout the course period
* Working knowledge of English
Now, please, read the Weekly Outline of the iEARN Trauma online course.
Please,
note that all of the discussions of the course throughout the nine weeks
will take place in the iEARN online Forum. All assignments are expected
to be posted in the Forum as well. The iEARN online Forum provides a
space for ongoing interactions among course facilitators and
participants throughout the course.
WEEK 1
This week is an orientation week to iEARN and an introduction to using the iEARN discussion forums.
Core activities:
- Playing video
- Introduction to iEARN
- Learningn to use the iEARN forum
- Trauma forums
WEEK 2
This
week the class will look at three case studies of children who have
experienced traumatic events and will be reviewing Trauma Risk and
Protective Factors.

- Childhood Trauma Introduction
- Case Studies (3)
- Trauma Risk Factors
- Trauma Protective Factors
- Case Study Reflections
WEEK 3
This
week you will be looking at and choosing an iEARN project to integrate
into our work and continue to study trauma impact and developmental
issues in symptomatology.

- iEARN Trauma related projects
- Childhood Trauma Impact
- Trauma Responses
- Differences by school grade
WEEK 4
This
week the class will take a closer look at how the iEARN community work
together, continue to plan project implementation and continue the
study of traumatization.

- The iEARN community at work
- The iEARN news flash
- Online Trauma Project Plan
- Retraumatization
- Secondary Stress
- What is Trauma never ends?
- Conclusion: Tests and Evaluations
WEEK 5
This
week the class will focus on completing all the tasks of the Week 4 and
finish the tests and evaluations. Also, this week, the class will have
a guest speaker, and will be focusing on Self-Help for school
personnel.
WEEK 6
The
guest speaker will continue his/her conversations with the clas this
week. In addition, you will be sharing an update on your classroom
project work with the clas. Also, the following topics will be studied:
- Teacher Interventions
- Creating Safe Classrooms
- Therapeutic Activities
WEEK 7
This week you will be looking at resources from:
- National Association of School Psychologists
- School Counselor Interventions: Prevention, Assessment, Traumatic Reminder, and Secondary Stress
- Resources for Children
Also, this week the class will work on development of a new trauma project.
WEEK 8
This week you will:
- Look at Crises Management Institute
- Review School Counselor Interventions
You will also review the requirements
for the Final Reflection Paper and continue the development of ongoing
and new project work.
WEEK 9
This
last week of the course you will look at videos that address teachers'
needs after a crisis. Reflection papers are due. The discussions on
your calssroom project work and the development of new trauma project
will be summed up.
A
successful completion of an iEARN online course is only the beginning
of a fruitefull collaboration between You, your students and your
school, and the iEARN global community! You will have many other
opportunities for professional development to participate in various
international, regional and local conferences and share your
experiences of working on collaborative projects. We will keep in touch
through e-mails and newsletters.
