Get Ready for Celebration of Teaching and Learning 2009:
he next Celebration of Teaching & Learning, will take place on March 6-7, 2009, at the Hilton on 6th Avenue (between 53rd and 54th Streets) in Manhattan.  Last year's 8,500+ attendees gave the professional development conference -- created by Thirteen/WNET -- rave reviews, and 2009 is shaping up to be even better.  Read more


iEARN Workshop at NECC:
Get ready for the 2009 NECC conference on June 28-July1 in Washington, DC.  iEARN would love to host a workshop prior to the conference to provide resources and discuss themes important to you.  Please take a moment to take a survey so we can design a workshop that works best.

Foreign Language Survey for Disabled Students:
National surveys show high school students with disabilities, while increasing in numbers enrolled, still lag behind their non-disabled peers in the percentages taking foreign language courses.... Are you a person with a disability who is interested in taking a survey about foreign language learning and disability? The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange seeks your and other individuals with disabilities input and experiences.  Take survey

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT
Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Ohio: iEARN teacher, Teddy Mwonyonyi, won the LIVE GREEN Teacher Grant, sponsored by General Motors and Discovery Education, that focuses enabling teachers to "implement imaginative classroom lessons focusing on sustainability."   The grant recognizes teachers who are using innovative tools to engage their students in hands-on activities.  Teddy was part of the iEARN Ohio pilot program in 2007 and will be participating an Adobe Youth Voices Online Courses administered by iEARN as part of a media training program.
 
Lower School Students Learn With iEARN: A Global Connection

"At the start of the school year, Lower School teachers participated in a workshop to learn about iEARN...In looking at this program, I became interested in their Christmas Card Exchange [Project].  As first card learns about holiday customs, this seemed a  perfect fit.  We were connected with seven schools: one in Germany, on in England, another in Ukraine, three schools from Canada and a school in Orlando Florida.  The teachers communicated through an internet forum via emails as we learned about each other's schools and customs..." Christmas Card Exchange Project - This popular project fills up fast - so join NOW.  Classes are grouped together and mail each other holiday cards while connecting online to promote dialogue to understand culture and traditions in various parts of the world.  Read more

Join the "Our Footprints, Our Future" Carbon Footprint Learning Circle Project - Space is limited so sign up NOW... Classrooms worldwide are invited to participate in a new series of Carbon Footprint Learning Circles. Each circle will essentially be a country without borders, working together to reduce their carbon footprint. The project will use Elluminate web conferencing tools to enable circles to "meet" once a month in order to set goals, discuss progress, etc... Read more
 
 

 
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Register NOW for Fall Professional Development Online Courses - Courses bring together participants from around the world, and will run from October 13 - December 15, 2008. Each course is designed so that by the end of nine weeks you will have outlined how you will use a standards-based iEARN project in your classroom. Courses include: Creative Arts, Language Arts/Writing, Social Studies/Contemporary Affairs/Geography, Science/Environment/Math, Teaching of Foreign and Second Langauges, Helping Students Cope With Traumatic Events, Learning Circles, Moving Voices (making digital documentaries), and PEARL (integrating journalism skills into the classroom). Online Course Scholarship Opportunity - With funding from the US Department of State, iEARN-USA is offering scholarships to four teachers in the USA.  Interested teachers should have an interest in integrating global projects that connect their students with peers in countries with significant Muslim populations.   This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with colleagues in other countries, while learning how to use digital media tools to enhance a global curriculum.  If you are interested in applying for this scholarship assistance, please download and complete the application form and return to Tina Habib, Director of Government Grant Programs.
