iEARN and Adobe partner on Adobe Youth Voices, a global initiative empowering youth to create with purpose.
Adobe Youth Voices is Adobe's a global philanthropic initiative that empowers youth worldwide to comment on their world using multimedia and digital tools to communicate and share their ideas, demonstrate their potential, and take action in their communities. Adobe Youth Voices employs an integrated approach in and out of the classroom to show the power technology brings to learning and enable middle-and high-school aged youth to think creatively, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively—critical 21st century skills. In 2009-2010, iEARN-USA is coordinating an expansion initiative to bring educators into the program from Argentina, Bahrain, Belarus, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Mexico, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, UAE, Uganda, and the USA. National AYV Activities
Argentina. iEARN-Argentina (TELAR) held its National AYV Workshop in Chubut on February 12-13, 2009. "Diario el Chubut" featured an article about the event - Finalizó taller "Las Voces de los Jóvenes." Participating teachers from 7 different provinces attended the workshop, which was held at the Teachers Training College Nº 808. There was a lively exchange of opinions, expectations and experiences, enhanced by the fact that some of the teachers had participated in the online course in October-November 2008 while others had only read about it. Two AYV videos, "A Request From Earth" and "Eyebrows", were shown as a way of illustrating what was intended with the project. They were analyzed having in mind Adobe Youth Voices mission of supporting youth to "Create with Purpose" and considering what "Inquiry-based Learning" means. The afternoons were dedicated to working with the software with the outstanding guidance of Professor Gastón Siricksman, a professional who works as a teacher at secondary schools and Teacher Training Colleges as well as making professional media. Pedagogical strategies and the audio-visual approaches were addressed, as well as the specific work with the software. Some local youth media produced by Gaston's students was shown so teachers could see what the students in our own reality could achieve. In July, 2009, participating AYV school, Ipem Nº 23 Lino Enea Spilimbergo, de Unquillo, received press coverage of their upcoming trip to the AYV Bay Area Summit.
Belarus. iEARN-Belarus kicked off its AYV activities with an initial National Seminar from September 5-6, 2008. A second Educator Meeting was held on December 16, 2008, and a third workshop on January 5-6, 2009 hosted by Minsk Politechnical Gymnazium #6 for AYV teams from Minsk, Lida, Schuchin, Zditovo, Smorgon, and Slonim. Participants of the first online course shared experiences with educators and students who started their course in February. For 2 days, 52 participants were introduced to technology tools and AYV resources to support student-created work. At the end of the two days, teachers and students demonstrated their first works in different media formats. Click here to see more about AYV in Belarus.
Botswana. iEARN-Botswana hosted an AYV Workshop at Livingstone Kolobeng College in Gaborone from January 30-31, 2009. The Ministry's Inspector of Schools, Mr M Hulela, attended, representing the Department of Secondary Education. In addition, two principals were present. On June 5, a follow-up workshop was held to address various software difficulties faced by participants.
Brazil. iEARN-Brazil held an introductory AYV Workshop for 14 educators and students on November 22, 2008 at Escola Técnica de Brasília – a professional technical school in Taguatinga. A second AYV workshp was held on May 23rd at COOPLEM, a cooperative language school in Taguatinga.
Canada. iEARN-Canada held its National AYV Workshop from Dec 5-7, 2008 at the Bathurst New Brunswick, District Offices. The iEARN-Canada team has also created a set of Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements software tutorials for AYV participants in iEARN. Egypt. The First Workshop was held on the 9th of February, 2009 in El Delta International School - El Dakahlia. The workshop was held by Ms. Sahar Farouk Gad - Trainer and Quality & Training Unit Supervisor in Zahran Experimental Language School. The workshop was under the supervision of the Educational PC Supervision at the Dakahlia Educational Zone. The Second Workshop was held on the 18th February, 2009 in Asmaa Bent Abi Bakr Preparatory School for Girls ” Assiut. The Workshop was held by Mr.Adel Hamouda, E-ERA Trainer. Gulf Countries. 10 educators from Oman, UAE and Bahrain came together for an Adobe Youth Voices training at the University of Bahrain’s E-Learning Center on November 18-20, 2008. The workshop started with a welcome ceremony attended by officials from Bahrain's Ministry of Education, the Deputy Public Affairs Officer from the US Embassy in Bahrain, and iEARN Bahrain representatives, principals and teachers. The participants included six secondary teachers from Bahrain, two Omani and two Emirati educators. During the three-day training, the teachers looked at youth media both in theory and practice, and discussed ways to use multimedia to promote youth engagement in their classrooms and communities. They explored Adobe’s programs and spent time producing short videos to study the production process. Some of them also shared media projects that they had implemented with their students. The workshop culminated with the educators discussing how they would implement Adobe Youth Voices in their schools and motivate their students to produce meaningful projects. They were presented with Adobe software packages and certificates acknowledging their successful participation in this regional workshop.
India. iEARN-India hosted an Orientation Event for AYV at the Sri Aurobindo International School, Vidya Nagar, Hyderabad on October 18, 2008. A second event was held on February 14th, and a final exhibition of student work is planned for iEARN-India's National Conference, May 2-4, 2009 to showcase the work of participating young people.
Pakistan. iEARN Pakistan held a national AYV Workshop on February 13, 2009 at a local hotel in Karachi. iEARN Pakistan arranged this program to exhibit the rough cuts of media pieces produced by youth as their Adobe Youth Voices projects. The aim of the workshop was to get constructive feedback and comments from a panel of media experts and educationists. Videos made by participants from 4 different schools were presented and reviewed by the panelists for further improvement. The participants learned about the different aspects of filmmaking, for example, importance of natural voice while dubbing, speed of title and credits, effective movement of shots and scenes to make the best use of time, importance of story and script etc. Groups of teachers and students from 8 more schools who are selected for Adobe Youth Voices Round 2 also participated in this program. Overall 17 teachers and 95 students attended this seminar. All the participants benefited greatly form the panelists’ experience of media production and addressing social issues. On May 16-17, 2009, 20 Turkish teachers from all parts of the country gathered at the Enka School in Istanbul to participate in a training to learn about iEARN and Adobe Youth Voices The teachers became familiar with the program, and received software to support their activities.
Uganda. iEARN-Uganda (SchoolNet Uganda) held a 5-day face-to-face workshop from 26th Jan -30th Jan 2009 with all participating educators and student representatives from each site. Click here for more about AYV in Uganda. USA. iEARN-USA hosted 3 Adobe Youth Voices sessions at the National Educational Computing Conference, NECC, June 28-July 1, Washington, D.C. Presenters included Svetlana Yakubovskaya from Belarus, Mali Bickley and Jim Carlenon from Canada, Dalia Khalil from Egypt, Debbie Anderson from Louisiana, Saleem Ibrahim from Pakistan and Daniel Kakinda from Uganda.
